Assistant General Counsel, Head of North America Legal

OANDA is seeking an ambitious, experienced and proactive senior regulatory and commercial lawyer to become a key member of our global Legal Department to lead the legal support of our operating companies in North America and to assist with management of the department.  The successful candidate will report directly to the General Counsel and will manage a team of 2-4 lawyers and paralegals located in the United States and Canada.  This role will require working autonomously as well as part of a collegiate and supportive international and local cross-functional legal team. 

Responsibilities:

  • Advise on regulatory strategy, including horizon-scanning of legal and regulatory developments, conducting impact assessments and communicating changes in the regulatory landscape applicable to OANDA’s operations
  • Manage day-to-day legal matters arising from US and Canadian operations, including matters relating to US, Canadian and global regulatory licensing processes
  • Provide commercial and solutions-focused regulatory advice to senior executives within the business, including for product launches, product development and geographic expansion
  • Anticipate, identify and escalate legal issues of concern
  • Support and lead the delivery of strategic projects for the Legal Department
  • Educate and train internal stakeholders and other team members
  • Contribute to team development, scaling, efficiency and improvement
  • Build and manage relationships with external stakeholders, including regulators, external counsel and advisors
  • Advise on and negotiate a wide range of commercial arrangements
  • Participate in the consideration of potential acquisitions and other M&A transactions
  • Play a key role within the Legal Department in connection with all legal matters, including relating to employment, intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, compliance-related issues (including anti-money laundering, know-your-client rules and sanctions compliance) and any and all other legal issues that may arise globally
  • Support the General Counsel in managing the global Legal Department 

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate degree (or international equivalent) and member of at least one US state bar in good standing
  • At least 8-10 years of experience, ideally in a combination of private law firm and inhouse corporate environments, advising on financial services regulatory matters
  • Experience preparing for and advising on regulatory examinations
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong technical skills, a lateral and commercial approach and the ability to assess and understand the business impact of regulation, including on customers, operations and products 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, juggling priorities and dealing with large amounts of information efficiently and effectively
  • Responsible, conscientious, proactive, motivated and a problem-solver, with the ability to successfully balance being a team player and working independently
